We have romanticized ideas of fairies nowadays; this has to be down to the fairies that many of us have come across in pantomimes, literature, plays and films. One of the most famous fairies is Tinkerbell, taken originally from JM Barrie's play and novel about Peter Pan. Tinkerbell hit the big time when Disney immortalized her in their Peter Pan film; no trip to any of the Disney Parks is complete without encountering this magical delicate creature.
Look further back into our pre-Roman past fairies were a much more sinister force, food was left out to placate these restless souls and people worked hard to avoid them, they viewed them as a real threat. Our ancestors feared that they could take a person away from their community into a parallel world, even worse was that a fairy would steal a person's mind; supposedly this is where we get the expression "off with the fairies"!
In fancy dress terms fairies are gold dust, they combine delicate (sometimes skimpy) dresses in a beautiful range of colours with wings and a healthy obsession with glitter.
