Mummies have been a great source of horror stories. If we think about mummies we immediately think of Ancient Egypt; if you were rich and powerful back then you were dying to have a good mummy, sorry that's an apathetic attempt at a joke. It is a little known fact that mummification used to be popular in East England; if you were putting up a big important building you would bury a mummified cat in the foundations to ensure the safety of the building.
The world's imagination was really fired up by all things mummy related when in 1922 Howard Carter and his team found the tomb of Tutankhamen. Since then the movies have adopted the mummy as an archetypal horror figure, from Boris Karloff to The Hammer House of Horror right up to the more recent Universal Features franchise of The Mummy.
The costume shown is from our colleagues at www.fancydress.com. They also do a Mummy Queen to go with the man's version. You can paint out your skin with Corpse make-up to make the effect even more horrific.
